“WINTER
When painting this particular snow scene in watercolor, it
requires discipline to leave enough white to describe a bright sunny winter
day. Observe the painted areas against
the white “negative” shapes – isolate them, check the hard soft edges and how
the shadows give form to the undulating landscape. The suggestion of warm pinkish color in the
white snow keeps the work from being harsh and cold. The background is muted
while the foreground is dark and strong.
We have done this painting before but it is an excellent lesson on how
to paint very little to get a big result.
You might want to make this painting your own by changing the
figure to suit your own composition;
kids on sleds for example or someone bringing home a Christmas
tree. Be creative.
Brushes: 1” flat, #10 round or
any suitable brush of your choice.
Watercolor, the brand I use is DVP, Di Vinci
Brand Artist’s quality but any artist’s brand will do. (I recommend artists
quality rather than student quality pigment.
Student quality has fillers and therefore almost impossible to get the
density of color needed).
Paper: Any brand
of no less than140lb. An inexpensive watercolor pad for practice is helpful. My
personal favorite is TH Saunders (Waterford) 140 or 200lb. Both can be purchased on line at Currys.com
Brushes: One inch flat and
size 10 or 12 round
Other materials: Water
container, rags and a plastic cloth for the work table.
Please bring sketch paper for exercises and
note taking and also a hairdryer.
Class is limited to 15. If you need more information or you have any
questions call 823-1905 or email ja864@yahoo.com
Cost: $25 (no tax)
