PEN
PEN
Painting #2 is done on primed watercolor paper and pen and ink. Priming paper allows for lifting and gives an
interesting texture to the work. Painting #3
is done using the three primaries “fused” into the paper then while the paper
is still wet, drawing with a pen allowing the ink to bleed a little. Painting #4 was the most fun of
all. After using large washes of bright
color, I then drew in the buildings and like painting #3, allowed some of the
ink to bleed. Some of the details were
done using a brush.
Materials: If you have time, prime a piece of watercolor
paper with some kind of white paint (gesso, white acrylic or white latex house
paint – if you don’t get a chance, I will be bringing some primed paper with
me). The pen I used was an ordinary
black pen that I purchased at Staples (their own brand). It works very well for this. Again, I will be
bringing some extra pens with me for you to use if you don’t have one. Also bring a small potato and a knife to cut
it with.
Once
again, we will be meeting at 9am for some exercises. This week we will be working specifically
with brushstrokes.
Because
we have four paintings to work on, the first three can be done fairly
quickly. They are simple and straight
forward. The fourth will be the main
feature.
Brushes: 1” flat, #10 round or any suitable brush of
your choice.
Colors: Full Palette.
(The brand I use is DVP, DiVinci Brand Artist’s
quality but any brand will do).
Paper: Quarter
sheet of 140lb of any good quality watercolor paper – my personal favorite is
TH Saunders – either 200lb or 140lb.
You will also need: Water
Container, rags (cotton towels are excellent), sketch paper for exercises and
note taking and a hairdryer.
